Up the Creek Boutique opened in June of 2015 in the old Mount Pleasant Seafood Building on Shem Creek. Sharing the address with Coastal Cushion and Canvas, a sister business, Up the Creek was created in anticipation of the new Shem Creek boardwalk project. The owners, Sundance and Cara Rivera, are Charleston natives with backgrounds in Education and Marine Canvas, a seemingly incongruous blend that works well for their eclectic businesses.
Cara’s family roots in retail influence her sense of fashion and style. Her great and great-great grandmothers owned boutiques in Downtown Charleston and Aiken, SC. Family legend holds that her grandmother sold Minnie Pearl her original hat, telling her “That looks perfect, tag and all!” thus launching the comedy star’s signature style!
Up the Creek offers everything from quality coastal gifts to fantastic nautical salvage pieces and refreshments. Stop by on your next visit to Shem Creek and see how these two locals created a boutique that’s packed with fun fashion, historical items, and tasty treats!
